The organisation of doctoral-level studies
In Slovakia, there are public and private higher education institutions. All institutions provide accredited doctoral programmes.
The aim of doctoral study is to develop knowledge on the current state of scientific and artistic research mainly based on a research contribution. Doctoral study therefore consists of two parts - study and research - and can be combined with pedagogical activities. Passing a dissertation exam and the successful defence of a thesis is a precondition for the accomplishment of doctoral study in Slovakia.
Doctoral candidates are systematically assigned a supervisor. The supervisor tracks the study plan of the doctoral candidate, recommends literature, gives advice on the candidate's research activities and reports once a year on the results of the candidate. Doctoral candidates have to follow compulsory courses.
The average length of a doctoral programme is three years. It may last five years in the case of part-time study.
